Recently, in my Introduction to Digital Media Module in college we were given a talk about the Smarter Travel Initiative of Limerick City, which encourages the people of Limerick to think about their means of travel and possibly improve it to benefit the environment and possibly their wallet! For week 4 we were assigned the task of swapping one of our methods of travel for one of the initiatives recommended alternatives such as walking, cycling or even car pooling. However, due to the abnormally dry and warm weather we had been in the first half of the semester, I mostly walked into college from my student accommodation as it was only a 5 minute walk. However I would usually take a bus into the town centre on a Thursday to do a small bit of shopping and a compulsory visit to Moody Cow Milkshakes in Arthur’s Quay…. Soon I realised there was a much easier option than taking the bus, which cost €2 each way, €4 in total for a trip and took up to 40 minutes from the Stables Bus Stop. So, rather than going into town by myself on the bus, I decided to Car Pool with a few of my house mates. Our only sense of direction was that of tipsy experiences of getting taxi’s into town on Thursday nights, however the slight bit of memories we could scramble together served us well as we managed to find the car park next to Crush87 nightclub which is easily accessible, is very central and only 2 euros for a parking disc! With four of us in the car the overall cost of the trip was roughly a euro each including fuel however the best bit about it all was that it was only 10 minutes per trip as opposed to half an hour a trip! Now I am in no way saying that taking the bus is not a good idea, for those of you that don’t have a means of car pooling then it is a very good alternative although time-consuming however I can’t recommend enough that people who regularly take single occupied car trips to car pool, it will save you so much money and it will save others so much time!
